medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. August) is the feast day of:
Romanus of Rome ( d. 258) Romanus was a soldier who guarded St. Laurence
in Rome before his execution. He was so impressed by Laurence's bravery
that he converted and was baptized by Laurence---and was martyred with him.
Auctor (5th cent.) Auctor was a bishop of Metz who lived and died in the
fifth century. His relics made it to Marmoutier in the ninth century and
to Braunschweig in the twelfth---he is the city patron of the latter.
Maurilius of Rouen (blessed) (d. 1067) Maurilius was born in Rheims in c.
1000. From c. 1025 he was scolasticus of the cathedral school of
Halberstadt. Then in c. 1030 he became a Benedictine monk at Fecamp. In
c. 1050 he was made abbot of the monastery of S. Maria in Florence. In
1055 he was made archbishop of Rouen. He was a leading reformer of his
time (and obviously quite a traveler!)
John of Alverna (blessed) (d. 1322) John ws born in 1259 in Fermo, Italy.
He joined the Franciscan order in 1272 and from 1289 until his death lived
as a hermit on Monte Alverna. He was famous as a miracle worker and
spiritual advisor. His cult was approved in 1880.
