medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. August) is the feast day of:
Cyriacus (d. c. 304) According to legend, Cyriacus was the archdeacon of
Pope Marcellinus. In Diocletian's persecution he was arrested and spent
years at forced labor in Rome's quarries. As he continued to preach
Christianity there, he was finally murdered. He is regarded as one of the
14 Holy Helpers.
Mummolus (d. c. 680) Mummolus became the second abbot of the monastery of
Fleury in c. 670. He is credited with obtaining the relics of Benedict of
Nursia and Scholastica for the monastery.
Reginlinde (blessed) (d. 958) Reginlinde was married first to Duke Berkard
I of Swabia, then to his successor Hermann I. After Hermann's death, she
dedicated herself to supporting monasteries and churches; already after
Burkard's death she founded a nunnery in Zurich.
Famian (also known as Quardus, Wardo, and Gerhard) (d. 1150). Famian was
the first canonized saint of the Cistercian order. Born in c. 1090 in
Cologne, he made pilgrimages to Rome and Santiago, and then became a hermit
in Galicia for many years. In c. 1142 he entered the newly founded
Cistercian monastery of Osera, where he was ordained. He died in Umbria
while on the return journey from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He was
canonized in 1155. Many pilgrims (and tourists) still visit his relics in
his basilica in Gallese, where the saint's intact body can be seen.
Dominic Guzmán (d. 1221) The founder of the Order of Preachers
(Dominicans) was born in c. 1170 in Spain. He became a cathedral canon of
Osma. While in that position, he accompanied his superior on a trip that
took them through southern France, where Dominic was so concerned by the
pervasiveness of Catharism that he decided to become a missionary. He and
the followers he attracted gave up their worldly possessions, traveling on
foot and preaching in emulation of the Cathar leaders. The new order was
confirmed by the pope in 1216. Dominic died on 6. August 1221. He was
canonized in 1234. His feast day was transferred to 8. August in 1972.
