medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Benjamin,
I forwarded your email to a friend of mine who works on
acoustics. I asked him if he knew of any specific
work on church acoustics and this was his reply.
He said to email him direct if he could be of any
further use, so I've included his sig at the end.
Hope this helps!
Katherine

Subject: Re: FW: [M-R] Textiles in Churches - Acoustics
Hmmm... Very interesting...
Not to my knowledge. Concert Halls are the big topic of study although
obviously churches etc were the first concert halls, but I haven't come
across
anything specific apart from the odd alleged story. However good places to
start looking would be:
Master Handbook of Acoustics by F. Alton Everest,
Music, Acoustics and Architecture by L.L Beranek,
Acoustics by L.L. Beranek.
Plus a good old trawl through the Abstracts of the Journal of The Acoustical
Society of America should turn something up.
Sounds like a good hypothesis to me, and could be worth persuing. However
there
is the trade off between choral works and lots of reverberation and speech
and
low levels of same.
