medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Can anyone help me find out the provenance of a story I have heard told of Dominic but which does not appear in the Golden Legend and which I suspect is an urban legend told of more than one saint. The story goes that X (in this case Dominic) was being shown around St. Peter's (why not the Lateran?--already I'm suspicious) by the pope. The pope says, pointing out the splendors surrounding them, "you see, Peter can no longer say, 'Silver and gold have I none,' to which X (Dominic) replies, "yes, and neither can you [unliike the original Peter] any longer say 'Rise and walk' "(an allusion to the curing of a lame beggar at the Temple by Peter and John as related in the early chapters of the Acts of the Apostles).
Does anyone know where this story originates in medieval sources?
