medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am working with a list of sins that I think has some connection with
penitential texts. Near the top is the phrase "in manu episcopi,
presbyteri, deaconi uel in cruce." The first part of the phrase looks to me
similar to what is found in penitential texts where the various attonements
are divied according to the rank of the sinner, but I am at a loss to
explain "in cruce." Does anyone have any idea what this might refer to,
especially in the context of penitential manuals?
Thanks in advance,
Philip Rusche
