medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. August) is the feast day of:
Monica (d. 387) Monica, the mother of Augustine of Hippo, was born in 331
in Tagaste (North Africa). She married young, and soon converted her
non-Christian husband to Christianity. She bore three children. At least
to judge from Augustine's Confessions, Monica made it the goal of her life
to make him a Christian, especially trying to win him away from
Manichaeism. Gus was indeed baptized a few month's before Monica's death.
Monica's cult developed after 1162, when her relics were translated to
Arrouaise. A fragment of the epitaph of her original tomb was discovered
in Ostia in 1945. Her feast day was moved to 27 August (the day before her
son's) in the recent rearrangement of the Roman calendar.
Poimon (d. c. 450) Poimon was an important father of the Egyptian desert.
He was abbot of several groups of hermits who lived in the ruins of a
temple.
Caesarius of Arles (d. 542) Caesarius was born in c. 470 near
Chalon-sur-Saone. In 503 he became bishop of Arles. He won a great
reputation for the care of souls, and instituted many reforms in his
diocese. His testament is still extant, as well as many of his other
writings and sermons.
Syagrius (d. 600) Syagrius was bishop of Autun from c. 560 until his
death. He played an important role in both the ecclesiastical and
political events of his time.
Gebhard II of Constance (d. 995) Gebhard was a son of the count of
Bregenz. At the age of 30 he was made bishop of Constance, and in 983 he
founded the great Benedictine monastery of Petershausen. He is invoked for
help with sore throats.
Guarinus of Sitten (d. 1150) Guarinus was a monk, at first a
Benedictine---he co-founded the monastery of Aulps in the diocese of Genf
and became its abbot in 1113. In 1136, however, he and his flock became
Cistercians. In 1138 Guarinus was made bishop of Sitten (Sion).
Amadeus of Lausanne (d. 1159) Amadeus joined the Cistercian order at the
age of fifteen, in 1125. In 1139 Bernard of Clairvaux named him abbot of
Hautecomb. In 1144 he became bishop of Lausanne (this seems to be a good
day for holy Cistercian bishops!)
