medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Pat, that is an interesting question, to which I don't know the answers.
Fleury was conducting experiments towards the middle of the last century
that purported to give carbon dating validation to their claims. It seems to
me that Monte Cassino only allowed the Fleury claim so long as the Italian
abbey was in disarray. As early as the mid 900s, long before Abbot
Desiderius claimed to have rediscovered the bones both of Benedict and
Scholastica (the latter a whole other problem, as you know, with the Le Mans
claim and all that), Cassinese monks were arguing that Benedict's bones had
never in fact been taken. One argument I particularly liked was that the
"essential Benedict" had always been at Monte Cassino, since he was buried
there and so his physical substance had permeated the ground that thus the
entire surround of the abbey, no matter if Fleury got the dried up bones.

Dear Colleagues:
Does Monte Cassino still make a claim to having the body of St.
Benedict? Has the papacy or the church or the Benedictine Confederation in
some way ruled on the competing claims of Fleury and Monte Cassino?
