medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi folks --
I've read the Henry Lea stuff on the Inquisition and another couple of
books, more modern, whose authorship I can't remember offhand ('twas a
while back now). I'm going to be needing to do a fictional treatment of
the early Inquisition -- Albigensian Crusade-era. What would folks on
the list suggest as their favorite overviews/starting points?
Another related (as far as the fiction is concerned) question. I'm given
to understand there was sort of a standing urban legend throughout the
Middle Ages and Renaissance that a lot of priests/prelates were
magicians, natural philosophers, Gnostics, occultists,
devil-worshippers, etc? I'm wondering if there are any good sources that
explore this idea in detail (I'm interested both in actual historical
"priestly magic," to the extent that such exists, and laypeople's belief
in priests who are secretly magicians, heretics or demonolaters).
Thanks very much in advance! (And by the way, thanks for the running
"Saint of the Day" posts...most informative.)
