medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

begs the question.
the answer is obvious: Roch was an important player in the prefiguration of
[the return of] "The" plague in 1347/8.
it was his First Miracle.
and, a not-too-shabby one, at that, one must admit.
>Early records of the plague first show it in Egypt in 542 after which it
moved NW eventually coming to England and Ireland as 'The Plague of
Cadwaller's Time' in 664.
a scant 700 years before Roch's time.
seems like, in view of the recent contraversy over the exact nature of "The"
plague of the 14th c., it would be a bit problematical (as present mis-usage
mis-uses that poor word) to say that the earlier outbreaks of "The" plague
were the same disease as "The" splendid plague we all know and love.
the subject(s) has come up from time to time on the mediev-l list, but without
any "definitive" conclusions, as far as i could see. and, if the Historical
Pros over there can't figure it out, the best us Believers
over here can do is to just declare it a Miracle and go home.
best to all from here,
miraculously yours,
christopher
