Well, the need for a soundboard above a pulpit was recognised in the late
mediaeval period at least. I know I've seen an illustration of a respected
teacher lecturing, with a row of students on benches before a raised pulpit
which has a curved soundboard above it. (The book has gone back to the
library-- reference available if valuable. Sorry!) This suggests a certain
pragmatic awareness of how speech (at least) behaves in large spaces.
Presumably as a result of the number of man-hours spent in churches in the
middle ages some level of acoustic science emerged, just as some level of
engineering and building science emerged (ie things stayed up). Wouldn't it
be good if they had written it down?
Best,
Pat
