medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
>Monica (d. 387) ...At least to judge from Augustine's Confessions,
Monica made it the goal of her life to make him a Christian, especially trying
to win him away from Manichaeism.
seems like he would have had to have been a "Christian" before he was
"won away from" Manichaeism.
Questio: was A. an "orthodox" Christian after his winning away from
Manichaeism, or was he a "Catholic"?
>Caesarius of Arles (d. 542) ...His testament is still extant...
does anyone know where this document is to be found? is it an "original"
manuscript or a later copy? "authentic"? anyone looked at it critically in
the last few centuries?
>Syagrius (d. 600) Syagrius was bishop of Autun from c. 560 until his
death.
two 6-7th c. bishops of Autun celebrated on the same day, out of a handfull of
saints on this day. and, i seem to remember quite a few mentions of Autun in
previous saints' day posts.
could there be some sort of bias in the Calender --e.g., an important
martyrology surviving from Autun within the --i assume-- small number of mss.
making up the source-pool from which our calendar is composed which might skew
the winnings?
just idle questions.
maybe Autun really *was* an important center, nurturing ground of Saints.
best from here,
christopher
