medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. August) is the feast day of:
Timotheus and Apollinaris of Rheims (d. 3rd or 4th cent.) Martyrs,
mentioned by Gregory of Tours. From an early time there was a church
dedicated to the two in Rheims.
Theonas (d. 300) Theonas was bishop of Alexandria from 282 to 300. He was
widely venerated in his lifetime, and did much to organize the Christian
community of his city. Much of his work was subsequently destroyed during
Diocletian's persecution.
Richildis (d. 1100) Although never formally canonized, there has been a
vibrant cult of Richildis in Bavaria since the fifteenth century.
Richildis lived in the second half of the eleventh century as a recluse
attached to the Benedictine nunnery of Hohenwart. In the fifteenth century
her cell was made into a chapel, and her bones were placed under the altar
(since 1869 in a glass shrine). It is still a pilgrimage site. In folk
belief, earth from Richildis' grave can protect from storm and lightning
strikes.
Philippus Benizi (d. 1285) His feast is celebrated on either the 22nd or
23rd. Philippus was born in 1233 in Florence. At the ae of 19 he entered
the Servite order. He is credited with bringing the new order (founded in
1233) to its first bloom, encouraging its spread in Italy and Germany
especially through his missionary journeys. He is also responsible for
founding the female branch of the order. From 1267 on he was general of
the order. In 1268 he came very close to being elected pope, but fled in
the night and hid in a cave until he was no longer being considered. He
was canonized in 1671. Philippus is invoked to aid epileptics and people
who are possessed.
