medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. August) is the feast day of:
Justinus of Rome (d. 269) Justinus is supposed to have belonged to the
Christian circle around St. Laurence. A perhaps legendary account reports
that Justinus buried many Roman martyrs, at which task he was one day
surprised by Christian persecutors. He was tried and executed.
Ia and companions (d. c. 360) Ia is supposed to have been a Greek female
slave who suffered for her faith in Persia at the orders of Shapur II,
along with 9000 other Christians captured in war. During her imprisonment,
legend reports that Ia converted many people to Christianity. She and her
companions were finally martyred.
Luanus (d. 622?) Luanus was from Limerick in Ireland and a student of
Comgall. He founded many monasteries, according to legend over 120,
leading some of them himself. He lived a life of strict asceticism, but
was gentle with other people and animals. Does anybody know if he is the
same as Molua, the founder of Killaloe in Co. Clare?
Sigrada (d. after 679) The mother of Saints Leodegar of Autun and Warinus,
Sigrada became a nun in Soissons after she was widowed. She died shortly
after her sons.
Rainer of Spalato (d. 1180) Rainer was a Camaldolese monk. In 1154 he
became bishop of Cagli and in 1175 archbishop of Spalato (Split), where he
was very active in defence of church property. Opponents of his policies
murdered him by stoning in 1180.
