medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. August) is the feast day of;
Philibert (d. 685) Philibert's shrine in Tournus was a great pilgrimage
goal until the seventeenth century, and still attracts pilgrims. Philibert
was educated at the court of King Dagobert I (P's father had become a
bishop when his son was about four years old). Philibert became a monk,
then in 650 abbot of the monastery of Rebais. He travelled around many
monasteries in France and Italy to learn about the different monastic
rules. After his return, he resigned his abbacy, wrote his own monastic
rule, and in 654 founded the first of his own monasteries---Jumieges. He
also founded Noirmoutier, and several other monasteries. Besides his work
as monastic founder, he is credited with evangelizing the region of Vendee.
Burchard of Worms (d. 1025) Burchard was born in 965. He entered the
monastery of Lobbes, and in 1000 was named bishop of Worms. He is most
noted for his collection of canon law.
Bernard of Clairvaux (d. 1153) Bernard, "Mr. Cistercian" as an irreverent
teacher of mine liked to call him, was the great popularizer of the
Cistercian order. He was born in Fontaines-les-Dijon in Burgundy in 1090;
in 1112 he---and thirty companions, including four of his five
brothers---entered the monastery of Citeaux. In 1115 he was sent out as
founding abbot of Citeaux' third daughter house, Clairvaux. In the course
of his life, he founded a further 69 Cistercian monasteries. Clearly a man
of strong personal charisma, Bernard preached the Second Crusade (and his
prestige was scarcely tarnished by its ignominious failure), and was
involved in many of the great religious issues of his day.
Ronald (d. 1158) (not formally canonized, but interesting (I think))
Ronald was ruler of the Orkneys, where he was responsible for the
construction of St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall. After a pilgrimage to the
Holy Land, he was murdered by anti-Christian opponents. A strong cult
developed very quickly.
