medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Isn't the theme of a talking statue, especially, perhaps, a statue of the
Virgin, very common in medieval hagiography? One example that comes to
mind is the vita of St. Hermann Joseph (AASS septima aprilis), in which a
statue of Mary does, I believe, walk and talk in response to Hermann's
devotion. And of course there is Francis's experience of the crucifix that
spoke to him. If I understand the query rightly, there must be numerous
other examples, since one of the great attractions of statues of saints was
that the faithful often believed them to be responsive to prayers.
