medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. August) is the feast day of:
Tarsicius (d. 3rd cent.) A letter of Damasus I reports that Tarsicius was
a Roman martyr, a deacon who was killed by non-Christians when he refused
to show them the eucharist.
Alypius (d. 430) Alypius was a friend and student of Augustine of Hippo;
they were both from the town of Tagaste. He was converted to Christianity
and baptized with Augustine, afterward returning with Gussie to Africa. In
394 Alypius became bishop of Tagaste.
Arnulf of Soissons (d. 1087) Arnulf was born in Belgium in 1040. He
became a Benedictine monk, and in 1076 abot of St.-Medard in Soissons. In
1081 he was named bishop of Soissons. For the rest of his life he worked
to bring peace to Flanders. Arnulf was canonized in 1121. He is regarded
as the patron of beer brewers.
Hyacinth of Poland (d. 1257) Hyacinth is recognized as one of the greatest
preachers of the thirteenth century. He founded the Polish province of the
Dominican order (which included other Slavic regions). Hyacinth had gotten
to know Dominic shortly before the latter's death, who received Hyacinth
into the Dominican order and sent him to work in his homeland of Poland.
Mechthild of Magdeburg (d. 1282 or 1294) Not formally canonized, Mechthild
was one of the great female mystics of Germany, and her work "The Flowing
Light of Godhood" is one of the masterpieces of mysticism. Mechthild lived
for over forty years as a Beguine in Magdeburg, following a very strong
penitential regimen. She experienced many visions, beginning when she was
twelve years old; finally at about the age of 40 she began to write them
down in the form of hymns and verses. In c. 1270 Mechthild entered the
nunnery of Helfta.
