medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. August) is the feast day of:
Irenaeus and Abundius (d. c. 258) According to tradition, I and A were
Christians in Rome who were martyred by being drowned in a canal.
Ninian (d. c. 430) Ninian was a Briton, according to tradition educated
and ordained as a priest in Rome. He then went back to his homeland as a
missionary, going to Galloway in southwest Scotland. He enjoyed great
success. He is reckoned as the founder of the bishopric of Galloway; his
center at Candida Casa became a famous school for Irish and British
Christianity. Ninian is one of the patron saints of Scotland.
Patricia (d. c. 665) (also celebrated on 25. August) Patricia is supposed
to have lived in the early seventh century at the imperial court in
Constantinople. When her family chose a husband for her she fled, since
she had vowed herself to chastity. She headed for the Holy Land on
pilgrimage, but when her ship stopped at Naples on the way (?!) she stayed
there, living a highly honored life as a virgin there until her death. Her
relics were rediscovered in 1549 in the Basilian monastery of SS Nicandro e
Marciano in Naples.
Herluin of Bec (blessed) (d. 1078) Actually, Herluin has never been
officially beatified, but has always had the title "blessed." Herluin,
born in c. 995 in Normandy, founded a monastery in 1034 on his family
estate, and became its abbot. In 1039 he moved the community to Bec.
Herluin, Lanfranc, and Anselm together made the monastic school at Bec one
of the most famous in Europe.
