medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Doesn't the tale of Our Lady's juggler fit here? Retired strolling
entertainer enters monastic life, feels unable to make adequate offering,
even his prayers are insufficient. Alone in the church one night he finds
suitable objects (surely his juggling-balls or whatever wd have been taken
from him?) and juggles and tumbles before the statue of Mary. The brothers,
finding him, are shocked, but the statue makes some sign of approval. I
don't know the source-- this is one of the stories I've "always known"--
but I believe it to be C13 or C14.
Best,
Pat
