medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. August) is the feast day of:
Agape of Rome (d. c. 125?) There is evidence of the cult of Agape in Rome
from the sixth century on. Next to nothing is known of her historically;
she seems to have been a martyr and to have died in the early second
century.
Eusebius of Vercelli (d. 371) Eusebius was born in c. 283 on the island of
Sardinia. At the age of 17 he left his family and became a cleric in Rome.
In 340 he became bishop of Vercelli, where he was the first bishop in
western Europe to live a common life with the clergy of his diocese. His
vehement opposition to Arianism led to his exile at the age of 71; he was
allowed to return in 361. Later legend reports that he was stoned by the
Arians, so Eusebius is sometimes honored as a martyr.
Kenneth (6th cent.) An untrustworthy vita reports that Kenneth founded the
monastery of Llangenydd in Wales. Later he is supposed to have gone to
Brittany. After his death Ploumelin became the center of his cult.
Peregrinus the Hermit (d. 643) Peregrinus ("the pilgrim") was, according
to legend, a Scottish prince. He became a hermit in the alps near Modena
after a pilgrimage to the holy land.
Aethelwold (d. 984) Aethelwold, who was born in c. 910 in Winchester,
became a priest in 943 entered the monastery of Glastonbury. He went on to
become abbot of Abingdon and then in 963 bishop of Winchester. Aethelwold
helped promote monasticism in England and founded or restored numerous
houses, winning the nickname "father of monks." He was also a patron of
art and architecture. He was honored as a saint immediately after his
death; his relics were elevated in 986.
