medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
since I missed Olafs main feast, i send this note on the
feast of his translation (probably not celebrated anywhere
outside the archdiocese of Nidaros). It is jut to let those
who might be interested in reading an early version of his vita,
in english, know that they can now obtain a volume entitled
A History of Norway and the Passion and Miracles of the
Blessed Olafr transl. Devra Kunin
ed. w. intro by Carl Phelpstead
from the Viking Society for Northern Research,
University College, London, 2001.
In spite of the rather victorian name of the organization,
they have published some very useful translations of
the earliest scandinavian chronicles, for the most part
unknown outside scandinavia. (as you see from teh title
of the above volume, you get one of these along with
St. Olafs Passio et Miracula.) For those interested,
the introduction also provides a good english summary
(probably the only english summary!) of the scandinavian
language research on the early history of the Olaf
material.
