Dear Wendy,
The copyright goes back to the original suppliers of the data. Both the OS and the AA (AFAIK, the only suppliers of street map data) use the same business model, which is that data are leased, not sold. Therefore, derivative products are still subject to the same controls as the original data. So, I am afraid the only way of getting a copyright free street map is to draw your own!
Of course, you could simply email your friends the link and get them to print out their own copy!
E&OE - Antarctica is (nearly!) free of these hassles!
All the best
Paul

Does anyone know of a source of streetmaps that won't fall foul of
copyright?
I have a need (outside work) to send out a map extract to give directions to
a number of guests to a meeting. UK Streetmap seems to allow one to link
to their site without restriction, yet printing is limited to one copy,
although their site would still be advertised if a printed copy were sent to
guests.
Any comments/suggestions?
