RESEARCH OFFICER (GRADE IA/II)
'Evidence-Based Health Promotion'
Social Science Research Unit
The Social Science Research Unit, which is directed by Professor Ann Oakley,
was established in October 1990 with a remit to develop a programme of
policy-relevant work in the broad areas of education and health. The Unit's
research programme covers health, education and welfare and employs a range
of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
The Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Co-ordinating Centre
(EPPI-Centre) has been involved in a methodological programme of work on
synthesising what is known about the effectiveness of social interventions
since 1993. This work includes two major programmes of work concerned with
advancing evidence-informed policy and practice, funded by the Department of
Health and the Department for Education and Employment respectively.

You will be responsible, jointly with the Research Officer who is already in
post, for the day-to-day management of the work of the EPPI-Centre and you
will be required to:
Conduct systematic reviews.
Supervise the EPPI-Centre's information and enquiry service.
Contribute to the co-ordination of the Cochrane Health Promotion and Public
Health Field (with colleagues in Australia).
Manage the EPPI-Centre databases.
Identify relevant health promotion literature through hand searching of
journals and electronic searching of commercially available databases
(Medline, EMBASE, etc).
Contribute to the classification and description of the identified
literature in terms of research design and other aspects of studies.
Establish collaborative work with other research institutions, both
nationally and internationally.
Write reports.
You will need:
A postgraduate degree or equivalent in social or health science.
Experience of health promotion work.
Experience of systematic review methods.
Commitment to, and understanding of, evidence-based health promotion,
including the role of prospective randomised studies.
Experience of searching electronic databases and familiarity with
word-processing and computer databases.
Experience of writing research reports.
Publications in a relevant area. A good record of publications will be
required for appointment at Grade II.
The appointment will be full-time and is available from 1 October 2001 to 31
July 2004.
Salary will be on the Research Staff Grade IA or II salary scale, £17,451 -
£26,299 and £24,193 - £32,215 per annum respectively, maximum on appointment
£25,203 per annum, plus £2,134 London Allowance per annum.
Job share will be considered. Secondment will be considered also.
