medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
You might look at _Anchorites and Their Patrons_ by Ann K. Warren. I
also wrote my dissertation on anchoresses, and you're welcome to ILL
that.
As far as archaelogical finds, many have been in Surrey. Anchoresses
were predominantly found in Britain, though as has been mentioned on
this list, there were others scattered around Europe.
>As far as I am aware, anchorites' cells were always attached to churches.
Cells DID NOT have to be attached to churches. Many were simply a
warded off section of a convent. Others were found in gates, in
bridges, even in markets. Some were attached ot churches in odd
ways--above the rafters, for instance. Also, there was a phenomenon
I call "dual anchoritism," in which two anchoresses lived together in
a larger cell. Some cells have even been found to be two stories.
