MRC Social and Public Health Sciences Unit
Survey Manager
We are seeking to recruit a survey manager to provide support
in conducting a wide range of surveys in the field of public
health. Plans for future work in SPHSU (Social and Public
Health Sciences Research Unit) envisage at least one large
survey (samples in the range of 1,000 to 10,000) each year. In
addition, there are likely to be two or three smaller studies,
either quantitative or qualitative, being conducted at any one
time. The Unit also has an allocation for at least two post
graduate studentships per annum who are expected to
undertake field research. The post holder will be expected to
provide advice and support at all stages on the planning and
conduct of these studies and in many cases to take
responsibility for the practical management of data collection
and processing the quantitative studies. The Unit has a
service statistician (Geoff Der) who can supply statistical
input to survey design. The postholder would report to
Graeme Ford, currently technical Director of the Twenty-07
study, the most long-standing study currently being conducted
by the Unit, and would be responsible in turn for managing the
work of two survey assistants who are employed to provide
clerical support. He or she would be a member of the
Administration Group which meets quarterly to ensure the
smooth working of the Unit.
The main tasks of the postholder will be to:
a) Manage the fieldwork of large scale quantitative surveys;
this would involve recruiting and managing a fieldforce of
interviewers, costing and managing fieldwork budgets,
devising office procedures for the running of surveys, and
supervising the work of the fieldwork assistants. This is likely
to form the bulk of the postholders’ day to day work.
b) Manage measurement equipment used in surveys, including
organising re-calibration of instrument such as
sphygmomanometers and spirometers before and during
fieldwork.
c) Liase with and arrange contracts with outside providers of
services such as data entry or audio transcription agencies.
d) Design, maintain and audit databases to monitor and
document all stages of fieldwork
e) Produce technical reports of fieldwork.
f) Coordinate the timing of fieldwork within the Unit to
maximise the efficiency of survey management
The enclosed document entitled “Services provided by survey
office” gives a more detailed breakdown of the services we
expect the Survey Management team to provide.
The postholder may also be asked to:
Develop skills in the methodology of both quantitative and
qualitative survey methods by attending relevant conferences
and courses, and disseminate this knowledge within the Unit
by incorporating best practice in the management of ongoing
surveys and by seminars and personal communication.
Essential qualifications are:
A good honours degree, in a social science, or other relevant
subject. At least two years postgraduate experience of
organising data collection and management systems,
preferably in the context of large scale quantitative social
surveys. Demonstrated ability to master a range of computing
applications preferably in a Windows environment with
particular emphasis on database management (we largely use
Access). Good oral and written communication skills.
Aptitude and willingness to liase with researchers,
statisticians, interviewers and members of the public.
Demonstrated ability to produce accurate well documented
work to deadlines. The ability to manage and direct the work
of others. Evidence of ability to plan systems for progress
chasing.
Desirable qualification include
Formal training in IT skills.
Some understanding of basic statistics, the candidate need not
have advanced statistical skills but should be capable of
understanding the input of statisticians. Knowledge of SPSS
would be advantageous.
