medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Drs. Salih, Martin, and Bugslag--
Thanks for the lengthy bibliographies. Some of these works I've already
consulted, but there are a number of things you've all pointed out I was
unaware of, or at least unaware of their significance to what I am trying to
do.
The Heffernan has been particularly useful, and my thoughts on monastic life
are very much influenced by St. Benedict and Leclercq's book. I am also in
agreement with Dr. Martin that the discovery of the self is not often enough
considered in light of patristics; even Augustine, who can be made to
represent the origins of interiority (I'm thinking of the recent book by
Phillip Cary), is a problem to this hypothesis. A particularly difficult
subject, this, and so many opinions out there.
Anyway, the nice thing is that between you you've managed to give me quite a
few points along the critical spectrum, some I may have missed on my own.
Many thanks for that.
