medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. June) is the feast day of:
Martial of Limoges (mid-3rd cent.; unless you believe Adhemar of Chabannes,
who says Martial was one of the original 72 disciples) The first bishop of
Limoges. According to Gregory of Tours, Martial was one of seven bishops
who came to Gaul from Rome in order to evangelize. Gregory also reports on
the many miracles performed at Martial's tomb.
Bertram of Le Mans (d. 623) A Frank, Bertram (Bertechram) was educated by
Germanus. He became bishop of Le Mans in 586, and became noted as a
founder of churches, hospices, and monasteries. His testament from the
year 616 is still extant.
Erentrudis (d. c. 718) Erentrudis was probably born in Worms. In c. 714
she came to Salzburg, where she became abbess of the Benedictine nunnery
that had been founded there by her uncle (or perhaps brother) Rupert of
Salzburg.
Otto of Bamberg (d. 1139) A Swabian nobleman, Otto was a loyal follower of
Emperor Henry IV. Henry named Otto bishop of Bamberg in 1102, but Otto
refused the honor until it was confirmed by Pope Paschal II in 1106. From
this almost unique position of approval by both emperor and pope, Otto
helped pave the way for the Concordat of Worms, ending the Investiture
Contest. At the request of Boleslav of Poland, Otto then established and
organized the church in Pommerania, winning the historical designation
"apostle of the Pomeranians." He created a network of missionaries, and
also worked actively as a church and monastic reformer in several dioceses.
Adolf of Osnabrück (d. 1224) Adolf was a son of the count of Tecklenburg,
born c. 1185. He became a cathedral canon in Cologne, then became a
Cistercian . In 1216 he became bishop of Osnabrück. He was a great
reformer of his diocese, and was already venerated during his lifetime.
