medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (25. June) is the feast day of:
Prosper of Aquitaine (d. c. 460) Born in Limoges, after separating from
his wife Prosper became a monk in Marseille. He corresponded with many
leading churchmen of his time, including Augustine and Hilary. When Leo I
became pope, Prosper joined him in Rome and became his advisor. He is a
special patron of poets
Adalbert of Egmond (d. c. 705) Adalbert was an Anglo-Saxon deacon who
worked with Willibrord as a missionary to the Frisians. He built the first
church in Egmond (Netherlands).
Burkhard of Mallersdorf (d. 1122) The first abbot of the Benedictine
monastery of Mallersdorf in Bavaria. I include him mostly from
curiosity---does anyone on the list know if he had a medieval cult? His
relics were raised only in 1695.
Dorothea of Montau (d. 1394) The daughter of a Polish farming family,
Dorothea married at the age of eighteen and became the mother of nine
children. After her husband died, she became a recluse, living a
stringently ascetic life and experiencing numerous visions, finally
receiving the stigmata. Her spiritual director Johannes Marienwerder wrote
an account of her life and experiences.
