medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. June) is the feast day of:
Ethelreda (d. 679) A virginal queen of Northumbria. She agreed with her
husband Egfrith to have a chaste marriage; when he later changed his mind,
Ethelreda refused and with the advise and aid of Wilfrid left him and
became a nun. She founded a double monstery at Ely in 673, over which she
became abbess. She died (apparently of plague); after 17 years her
incorrupt body was exhumed, beginning a very popular cult.
Jacob of Toul (d. 769) Possibly a Benedictine monk, Jacob became bishop of
Tul in 756. According to tradition, he supported Benedictine monasticism
strongly. He is supposed to have died while returning from a pilgrimage to
Rome, while praying before the grave of St. Benignus in Dijon.
Lietbert (d. 1076) Lietbert became bishop of Cambrai-Arras in c. 1050. In
1054 he went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land with several thousand other
pilgrims. His cult was approved in 1211.
Maria of Oignies (d. 1213) One of the first Beguines, Maria was the
daughter of a prosperous family of Nivelles. Forced to marry at the age of
fourteen, she convinced her husband to live chastely with her. Both went
to a leper colony outside Nivelles, where they cared for lepers. Maria was
a visionary and severe ascetic. In 1208 she went to Oignies (Belgium) and
with several female companions founded the first Beguinage in the region of
Liege.
