medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
An excellent secondary source, though it may be outside your range of
interests, is:
Robert James Bast, _Honor Your Fathers: Catechisms and the Emergence
of a Patriarchal Ideology in Germany 1400-1600_. Studies in Medieval
and Reformation Thought, v. 63. Leiden: Brill, 1997.
It examines the use of the fourth (fifth) commandment in regard to
paternal discipline and its extensions to church and state.
Most relevant to your interests would probably be chapter two
(Fathers of the House), which contains the subsections: Children and
Parents; Parents and Subordinates; Husbands and Wives; The Early
Luther on the Holy Household; The Housefather: Ally or Obstacle?; and
Crisis and the Catholic Patriarchy.
