medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi Celia-- the temple was commissioned by Sigismondo Malatesta in honor of
his mistress Isotta degli Atti. Allegedly, Sig. Malatesta had his wife
killed for Isotta (they were not called mala for nothing). The Temple is
remarkable in its Roman-ness since Alberti was converting a mendicant church
into a "modern" read Roman-revival temple. It was designed in 1450. For
bibliography, go to Bibliography of History of Art to which I am sure your
school subscribes--do advanced search for "Alberti" and "Malatesta". I
brought up ten items pretty quickly. good luck. sharon
