medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Celia--following up on George's suggestion of Siena--there is a fresco of
this image--part of Ambrogio Lorenzetti's Good Government. At the feet of
Buon Comune, are the suckling children- they are are the children of
Remus--wish I could remember their names--(Starn, Feldigs-Hennig,
Rubenstein, Greenstein have all written about the fresco), who obviously
recall the founding of Rome.
Also, Pavia had a durable second Rome trope that was embodied in a now lost
equestrian monument, the Regisole, that was erected in Ravenna, brought to
Aachen by Charlemagne and then later brought to Pavia. It hit all the
buttons for Pavia -Rome, Charlemagne, the Lombards. Statue no longer exists
but there is some literature on it.
My sense is that many Italian cities have some version of this "second Rome"
concept.
all best, sharon
