medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is all getting a bit off topic - I apologise - but:
Willy nilly = whether one wants to or not.
eg "He was obliged to join in the celebration willy nilly."
Meaning that the person was compelled to participate whether or not he
approved of the purpose of the gathering
eg "She was turned out of the room willy nilly."
This implies a speedy eviction - the person is not given the opportunity to
express a desire to go or to stay - she is forced out.
. "Willy nilly" implies haste, compulsion by a third party, a disregard for
the feelings or opinions of the subject and the use of force, moral or
physical.
