medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Colman,
The only comprehensive guide is Yves Delaporte, Les vitraux de la
cathedrale de Chartres (Chartres, 1926), with splendid b&w
illustrations by Etienne Houvet. Delaporte's work is still
fundamental, although it would be impossible to list all subsequent
scholarship. Your friend, however, should consult Jan van der
Meulen, Chartres. Sources and Literary Interpretation: A Critical
Bibliography (Boston, 1989), which runs to over 1000 pages! Of
particular note ar Colette Manhes-Deremble, Les vitraux narratifs de
la cathedrale de Chartres. Etude iconographque, Corpus Vitrearum
France, Etudes II (Paris, 1993), and Wolfgang Kemp, The Narratives of
Gothic Stained Glass (Chicago, 1995?). There are also many
individual studies. Good luck to your confrere: he has a daunting
task ahead of him!
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
