medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. June) is the feast day of:
John and Paul (4th cent.---or maybe the 2nd cent., according to another
source) Roman martyrs, whose cult developed early, but whose lives are
shrouded in mystery. Their Acts are borrowed from those of other martyrs.
They were supposedly brothers, but may not even have been Romans or died in
Rome.
David of Thessalonike (d. 537) Born in Mesopotamia, David became a monk.
After living in a tree for three years, he entered a monastery in
Thessalonike, where he remained for the rest of his life.
Vigilius (d. 405) Bishop of Trent, he was an active missionary in his
diocese. After considerable success, he was stoned to death by some of his
would-be converts.
Pelagius of Córdoba (d. 925) Pelagius was born in 912 in Galicia. At the
age of ten, he became a hostage to the Muslims after a battle. For three
years he was offered his freedom if he would convert to Islam. After many
refusals, he was finally tortured to death (at the age of thirteen). There
is still an active cult of Pelagius (Pelayo) in Spain.
Anthelm of Chignin (d. 1178) Born in Chignin (France), Anthelm became a
Carthusian monk, and 1142 head of the Carthusian order. In 1163 he became
bishop of Belley.
