Dear John and list,
My attempt at a casting vote is as follows:
1. Getting personal is irrelevant to the list, hurtful to the recipient and
ultimately damaging to the sender - who will listen?.
2. The debate should continue. It isn't often that we get discussions of
this detail on a topic this fundamental to the basis of structural geology
and tectonics.
I also suspect that the physics is too unfamiliar or advanced for many list
members. To that end, maybe the main protagonists (Rob Twiss, Dugald
Carmichael & Falk Koenemann) could recommend some good, basic text books
and/or papers on thermodynamics, tensors and elasticity for the rest of us
to chase down.
