Dear all
1. Judging by the number of error messages I have received, many
of you will not have seen this morning's posting from Falk because
it had a .EXE file as an attachment. Many mail systems nowadays
reject such messages because of the security risk that they pose.
I need to remind you all that attachments to emails can cause
problems, and you are discouraged from sending them. There are
alternatives, the most generally useful of which is to send the file to
me and ask me to put it into the Geo-tectonics file area on
JISCmail. Bear in mind though, that my University is one that bars
.EXE files as attachments and so you would need to convert a file
of that type to a ZIP file before I could receive it.
I have uploaded Falk's file, it is in the catalog as SAF.DOC and can
be viewed/downloaded as a Microsoft Word file. Go to
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/geo-tectonics.html
and click on the link 'Files associated with your list'.
2. Following my posting yesterday I've received an unprecedented
number of responses, 14. Yes, 14 out of a membership of around
900. Believe me, that is a significantly greater response than that
generated by any other issue. The current tally is exactly split, 7 in
favour, 7 against the discussion continuing on the list and no one
thinks that getting personal is a good idea. On the basis of the
sample so far I'd say there's no mandate for applying a guillotine to
the discussion. (For those of you unfamiliar with it, that's British
parliamentary speak for forcing people to shut up.) So, let the
debate continue, but I would ask participants in the discussion to
please ensure that the subject line clearly identifies the posting as
being a contribution to this thread. This will enable members who
aren't interested to readily skip them.
Cheers
John
