"In Washington, it's dog eat dog. In academia, it's exactly the
opposite." (Robert Reich)
There was a time when I agreed with you. But if it is not in good style to do
this, it is certainly unprofessional of a reviewer to reject a paper without
reason. We all rely on observance of the unwritten rules of science and
reviewing - that if a paper is carefully argued and professionally written such
that it is a valid contribution to the discussion, it should be published such
that it may be either accepted or refuted. These standards have been ignored
consistently in my case: they just stay silent. This silence is intentional.
I have been told too many times that publication of my papers would not be in
the _economic_ (sic!) interest of the person I spoke to. I gave a seminar talk
at Goettingen in 1998. One of those who was specifically invited for the
occasion told me later (in this case in the presence of a witness) that I should
face reality: it is not always the best that finds its way into general
acceptance, and it does not matter if a theory is right or wrong, but it matters
whether it is generally accepted or not; there is no place for idealism in this
case, and all those whose life is built on the older theory would loose too
much.
Is there a sanctuary for endangered theories? Why do we learn the rules of logic
if the only logic that really matters, is that of seniority?
You see, those who behave like this rely on my good manners - that I comply and
do not expose their failure. They use silence as a weapon. Publicity is my only
defense.
