Trish Greenhalgh asks if any members have an interest in evidence based
services for people with learning disability. She has received the
following message - please reply direct to the enquirer, Elenor Birkett, on
[log in to unmask] Many thanks.
"I am a Speech and Language Therapist who attended UCL in 1975 - Phonetics
and Linguistics. I completed a further research degree in Glasgow Uni. in
1985, also Linguistics. My area of research is and remains the use of
Makaton (a modified sign language) in people with learning disabilities. I
am currently working with a colleague in New Zealand to set up a web-based
site for gathering Evidenc based practice on people's progress with learning
signs and therefore developing their communication skills. We have a network
of Tutors world-wide and are struggling to establish common recording and
measurement criteria. Do you have any tips or thoughts on this? The other
issue is that as most people will be able to produce one or two case studies
at the most we cannot look at RCT'S as in clinical medicine etc. Does this
matter when looking at Evidence Based Practice?
Grateful for any help,
Yours Elenor Birkett"
