Struck by Lightening which Simon hasn't seen (but then again, he didn't like Cosi) is a bit dated now. It smacks of the patronising. Another excellent film is "A Woman's Tale" which is not about disability perse but is about an older woman with cancer (played by Florence ...oh bugger me gently..I can't remember her surname..You know; the one who played Lizzie Birdsworth in Prisoner [Cell Block H]). The theme is one of a liberal and independent woman whose son is trying to force her into institutional care. The parallels may be worthwhile. Florence whatsername won an Oz film Institute Prize - shortly after she died from cancer (curse this dementia).
Another bewdy is "Sweety" starring Genevieve Lemon and of course, "Shine" with Geoffrey Rush and Noah Taylor.
A really old one is "captives of care" which was written by and starred John Roraty about being "captured" in the institution in which he lived. I think this was a short tele-movie.
I am pretty sure House Gang is on video. If you can't find it contact Accessible Arts in Sydney.
Of course Muriel's Wedding has a kind of quirky disability part played very badly by Rachel Griffiths.
