Dear all
I think it's time that, as list owner, I made a couple of points
regarding the recent, very lively, discussion that Geo-tectonics has
carried.
1. On several occasions, both in the current discussion on stress
and earlier during the plate tectonics thread, I've been concerned
that some postings have contained personal attacks. I'm confident
most members share my view that an academic discussion list is
not the place for the airing of those opinions. I urge that all
members refrain from such postings.
2. With regard to the discussion thread on stress. I'm concerned
about the volume of traffic that is being generated given that in
many parts of the world we are in/approaching the season when
academics are away from their email accounts. The thread is
generating 3 or 4 messages a day and this could soon build an
email mountain for people who are away for a period. However, I'm
more concerned that the discussion has reach a point of very
detailed point and counter-point between a handful of protagonists.
I'd like to suggest that discussion at this level of detail could and
should be pursued off-list. It would then be up to the protagonists to
post any summary that could be useful to the majority of list
members.
I've had a couple of private messages from members supporting
this suggestion, I'd be happy to receive the views of others, either
via the list or privately. Incidentally, the address

is a good one to use in a context such as this. It comes directly
through to me, but separately from the main body of my daily email.
Cheers
