Oxford shoppers to be finger-printed (Weds16thMay14:00)
Shoppers in Oxford will soon be asked to give a thumb-print when they make a credit-card purchase.
A crackdown on fraud is to be launched at Cowley's Templar Square shopping centre within the next month.
The purpose of the crackdown is to deter criminals from impersonating card owners.
A police spokesman said "The criminal is not likely to leave his thumb-print, because of the nature of the crime these people haven't done this for the first time. They've had convictions for it, their prints are on record, it is just a matter of us matching those prints with theirs. What we've found is that criminals are unlikely to make a transaction in a store where the scheme is operating."
And of course they will ignore honest transactions conducted by criminals and ex-criminals, celebrities (who the tabloid press will pay to see their transactions), people involved in protest movements, suspected animal rights activists, their partners, etc. etc.
It is not widely known that fingerprints and blood samples taken by the police in 'elimination' exercises, and with the cooperation of people, are kept.
Despite constant requests the police have failed to give a categorical reassurance that these samples, taken with the cooperation of people believing they are helping the police catch criminals, are not kept.
People are always told verbally they will be destroyed, but there are now increasing numbers of people on file who innocently thought they were only going to be kept temporarily.
