Hi,
The link below points to a press release from Liverpool city council for a
proposed £1.9million extension to their CCTV scheme (we already have one of
the most advanced systems in the UK). For this money there will be 34
updated cameras and 71 new ones. "The system will be able to monitor almost
every person and car leaving and entering the city centre" and "The
operators will be able to read the headline on a newspaper from 70m away".
It then has some fuzzy guff about 'help points' for the public. All this is
estimated to be able to reduce crime by 30-50% "in the targeted areas". Then
follows some worse guff about how we should all love it to pieces, bah!
It's interesting how much of a big deal the 'partnership' is... am I
supposed to be pacified by this just because high street businesses and the
council think it's good and not JUST the police? I am troubled by the lack
of debate, in Liverpool at least opposing CCTV is tantamount to taking sides
with the Bulger killers (which is where the CCTV story started in
Liverpool).
Anyway;
