medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hardly medieval, and I will apologise to all for irrelevance, except
that some might find this interesting.
A small number of days back I was having coffee across town with a
friend, and before us was an old copy, provided by the cafe, of a
_Sunday Times_ magazine supplement on Park's library. I mentioned to my
friend that, as a youth, I'd handled a volume, my first 'old' book, and
my friend jarred. So:
In 1975 I was an A-level student of Reformation history. Our teacher at
the former Leigh Grammar School (Lancashire), a Mr Johnson, 'enlivened'
his classes by producing from the headmaster's safe (Ken Bruce -- we
called him 'Slug', though I forget why) an octavo printed volume, Latin,
early 16c and contemporary binding, and within whose cover was inscribed
'Thomas Cranmer'. If I recall correctly, there were further glosses in a
similar hand. I think it was the Psalms, though the Latin meant nothing
to me at that time, and I could well now be wrong.
How such a volume might have arrived at a provincial English grammar
school is a mystery to me, though, as any school will, we have had
famous 'old boys' -- e.g. Peter Maxwell-Davies. I have today written to
the relevant Education Authority (Wigan) to ask them where this item
might now reside. I will be happy to report back if anyone is
interested. Long forgotten, now recalled ... und in der langen zeitt ...
Angus, Oman
