Dear Dan,
I think Embase is definitely worth persisting with. It complements Medline
because of its bias towards drug/pharmacology articles and also its emphasis
on material published in Europe.Problem is (as I'm sure that you've already
discovered), it doesn't use MeSH but its own thesaurus of medical terms
called "EmTree." Frequently, EMTree and MESH terms are the same - but just
as frequently they aren't! You need access to the online thesaurus - how you
connect to this will depend on your Embase service provider. There is a
paper version of this available which I think gives some search hints
also.In the UK, Elsevier (the publishers of Embase) put on regular (free)
training sessions - these were hosted by Datastar/Dialog - I wouldn't be
surprised if Elsevier provide training for other host users across the
globe. I think it might be useful if you contact Elsevier at one of the
addresses below for information on available training and manuals etc.
Regards
John
