THE GODFREY AWARD
For a librarian or archivist who has
furthered the use, appreciation and
understanding of maps in an
exceptional way
In association with the British Cartographic Society, Alan Godfrey
Maps make an award every two years to a librarian or archivist who
has furthered the use, appreciation and understanding of maps. The
award consists of a cheque for £350 together with a specially
commissioned carving by the sculptor Ralph Williams, normally of a
migrating bird - in 1998 a swift - signifying the great travellers.
The most recent award was made to Margaret Wilkes, then Map
Superintendant of the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh. in
September 1998 at the annual dinner of the British Cartographic
Society, held at Keele University. Previous winners have been Martin
Hayes, Local Studies Librarian for West Sussex Libraries; Ralph Hyde,
Keeper of Maps and Prints at Guildhall Library, London; and David
Mander, Archivist for the London Borough of Hackney.
Insufficient entries for the year 2000 meant the award was postponed
until this year 2001 where it will be presented at the annual dinner of
the British Cartographic Society in Liverpool.
Nominations for this year’s award with details of why you think the
person has merited the award, and with the name of a seconder,
should be sent by mid July to Julie Snook, BCS awards officer, 16
Emmett Road, Rownhams, Southampton, SO16 8JB. Telephone and fax
