Do you have any sense as to whether it's likely to be early vs. late
medieval?
Probably the best overall reference work for sheer number of examples is
Millia Davenport's _History of Costume_--it has the strength of not relying
on line drawings (which can be downright awful at times), but rather on the
works of art themselves. (Its weakness is that it's in black and white; it
can also be a bit hard to find (it's out of print).
Also, what's the subject matter? If it's allegorical, it can sometimes put
a kink into using costume as a dating tool.
