medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear List,
Thank you very much for your help concerning my "Saint Problem" and sorry
for "bothering" you with it one more time.
Claire, I see your point that it is not easy to say "who is who" without
knowing the context. Sorry for that!
I am working on the lepers plot of 1321 in France in which also the Jews
were accused of having taken part and the whole thing was thought to be a
Muslim-Jewish conspiracy. The climax of these conspiracy theories was
reached around June 1321 when several FAKED documents turned up, mainly
letters from the Jews to Muslim rulers or vice versa.
One of these documents is a Letter (dated July 2nd 1321) from the King of
Granada to the Jews of France, in which he gives them instructions how to
proceed. The sentence I am referring to says: "Vous nous avez mande que vous
avez donne aux meiseaus par devers Saint Jaque, tout l'or que nous vous
avons transmis." (=You have told us that you have given to the lepers around
St Jaque all gold that we had sent you.(???)
The other letter (also dated July 2nd 1321) is from the King of Tunis to the
Jews of France and he says: "Vous savez que ciz acordement de nous, des juys
et des malades se fit derrerement, le jour de Pasques flories" (= you know
that we, the jews and the lepers came to accordance on the day of Pasques
Flories (???)) I could not find Pasques Flories in my dictionary and Carlo
Ginzburg in "Ecstasies" translated it as "Whitsun".
Scholars have -as far as I can see- not dealt with these two documents in
much detail or at least none of them discusses the dating which is why I am
a little at a loss here. As my thesis is that the Jews "entered" this
conspiracy scheme after (!!) the lepers and the muslims, it is quite
important for me to know what this dating (around St Jaque ) means. I came
to think it could mean John the Baptiste because this is a dating that comes
up in the context of another faked document.
If all this gives someone out there an idea, help is of course still very
much appreciated. Thank you everybody for the suggestions I already got!!
Have a nice day! Yours Silke
