1. THE NEXT MEETING - A FIELD TRIP TO NEW YORK CITY:
The tenth event of the Washington Map Society 2000-2001 program year will
be held on Saturday April 21, 2001, beginning at 10 AM. In New York we
will join members of the New York Map Society for a visit to the New York
Public Library's (NYPL) (March 9 - May 19) exhibit: "Heading West: Mapping
the Territory." "A place is not discovered until it is mapped." For the
American West the mapping took decades and continues today. This exhibition
depicts the evolution from an imagined West to a recorded West through maps
ranging from 1540 to 1900. It is organized in five sections, which
illustrate how the West was imagined, explored, settled, mined, and
traveled. Heading West, which is drawn primarily from the Map Division's
6,000 sheet maps and atlases of the American West, includes military maps
of various Indian territories; geological and railroad reconnaissance
surveys; government maps conveniently citing locations of gold, silver,
quicksilver, and coal; maps of land grants and military reservations; maps
of the gold rush lands; city plans; early maps of national parks; and
explorers' maps. For a look at the exhibit in advance of the trip, see
<http://www.nypl.org/west> and be sure to click all around that site for
all the possibilities.
Meet at 10 AM at the Gottesman Exhibition Gallery of the NYPL (5th Avenue
and 42nd Street) and enjoy the exhibit. Alice Hudson, member of the
Washington Map Society, Head of the NYPL Map Division, and Curator of the
exhibit, will be there. We will stay at the exhibit until about noon (but
you can stay longer or return in the afternoon, if desired. The Library
will be open until 6 PM).
After lunch (on your own or with friends), those wishing will proceed to
the annual New York Antiquarian Book Fair (Park Avenue Armory, Park Avenue
& 67th Street). You will find there an impressive assemblage of book
dealers and may map dealers too. This Fair is open Friday from noon to 8
PM, Saturday Noon to 7PM, and Sunday from 11AM to 5 PM. So you can come
early or stay into Sunday. See their site at
<http://www.sanfordsmith.com/nyabf/nyabf.html>
New York City map dealers can be open by appointment. We will leave that
to you.
