medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Patrick, the English equivalent is "ember days". Rather than attempt an
explanation of that term, which I am rusty on, you should be able easily to
find discussions of it in various encyclopedic and liturgical venues.

Subject: [M-R] Quatuor Temporum
medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I have a question that is a pretty elementary matter of liturgical
vocabulary. I am seeking an explanation of the term from the Latin
liturgical calendar, "quatuor temporum," as in "quatuor temporum
Quadragesimae." The Quadragesimae is obvious. It's the "quatuor temporum"
that puzzles me, and I know it's used in other contexts, too. What does it
signify? For instance, I can open up a pre-Vatican II breviary and see a
day styled "Sabbato Quatuor Temporum septembris" which occurs the day
before "Dominica IV septembris".
The reason I'm trying to figure this out is that I'm trying to make a
precise English translation of the following bit from the Trans. et mirac.
s. Viviani (23):
"Non post multo vero temporis intervallo, sabbato sancto jejuniorum quae in
quatuor temporum diversitates coluntur. . ."
This is the scene-setting for a healing miracle that takes place during the
conventual mass at Figeac.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Patrick Nugent.
