medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I was wondering if anyone had an idea of the legal meaning of
'obligo.' The verb shows up in Matthew Paris's short description of
Robert Grosseteste's election as bishop of Lincoln. He notes that
his choice was a 'surprise' since at the time, so it was said,
Grosseteste was bound (obligaretur) to the Franciscans. Now at
first I thought this was a fancy way of stating that Grosseteste was
still teaching at Oxford in 1235; but since that Grosseteste was not
the first university theologian to be taken away from the schools in
mid-career, I have been wondering if Paris is getting at something
more than simple obligation.
Here is the relevant sentence: "Tandem post multas inter
canonicos altercationes, elegerunt unanimiter magistrum
Robertum,cognomento Grosseteste, contra omnium opinionem,
licet, ut dicebatur, ordini minorum obligaretur." (Matt. Paris, Hist.
angl., 3.367).
Has anyone come across specific uses for this verb in mendicant
texts, or perhaps in canon law texts? I would be obliged to anyone
with suggestions. :-)
Cheers
Jim
